Epoxy Resin/Silica Finish
At Boundary Canoe Paddles we finish all of our fiberglass wrapped canoe paddles with a unique epoxy resin formula. Our formula is two-part epoxy resin base, with added silica and other hardening fibers for ultimate long-lasting durability. We feel our epoxy formula is very strong, and our epoxy formula encases the fiberglass cloth until it dissapears! This makes an ultra tough finish that will not splinter as easily when stressed. In other words, our paddles still look good if you bounce them off of shallow rock formations. This finish is applied in two-layers, and completely encases the paddle blade, protecting it from the harsh environment. Our formula hardens the paddle blade and protects it from dents and dings. Some of our competitors use what they call a "resin tip" on there paddles. This is NOT similiar to our epoxy resin formula!! Our formula will NEVER chip off and is completely clear. We also protect the entire blade of our paddles with our special formula, not just the tip of the blade.
We offer either a "fiberglass blade wrap"or "varnish only finish" on any of our paddles( add $29.95 for blade wrap). Either finish is very strong!
In addition to our double-layered two-part epoxy resin/silica formula, we also apply 3 coats of ultra UV, protecting marine varnish to the entirety of all our fiberglass wrapped paddles. Our "varnish only canoe paddles" are layered four times with marine varnish. Many paddlemakers use polyurethane instead of marine varnish. Polyurethane is easier to apply, but lacks in durability and protection from the weather. We use marine varnish only--it has light absorbers--resists all solvents, oils and other chemicals--resistant to water temp. of 220° F. This is the best protection for a wooden paddle!!
