When choosing paddle length, remember, the BLADE LENGTH IS FIXED. When you choose your paddle length, you are only adjusting the length of the shaft. See PHOTO.
There are many theories and opinions on how to choose paddle length. In reality, all that matters is personal preference, and intended use of the paddle. For example, an experienced paddler might use a wide blade, short shaft paddle in fast-water and use a slim blade, long shaft paddle in flat-water. Another paddler might use one general type and size of paddle all the time, in all conditions. All in all, it's up to the paddler what he or she likes for the style and size of their canoe paddle.
For beginners, use the paddle descriptions to learn the importance of paddle characteristics. Choose your paddle length according to your general body size. If you are unsure, as a general rule, go with the smaller length of paddle.
